Although every painting often presents its own set of unique challenges and problems, I generally use the same method - building up my pictures in several layers, allowing the paint to dry between layers.

 

I use exactly the same process whether using acrylics or oils. (It is obviously much quicker with the former paint and I use a quick drying medium with my oils to accelerate their drying time.) Acrylics can also be used on the first couple of layers to expedite the process before switching to oils for the latter stages.

It should be noted of course that this is a simplification of the process - most paintings require some degree of reworking/retouching in the latter stages and I often paint more than one 'final layer' on a subject or background should it need improving.
